Global Smash Nine Past Philippine Army, Green Archers And Kaya In Stalemate

1 February Results:
Global 9-1 Philippine Army-GTI
Kaya 0-0 Green Archers United Globe
Dolphins United 4-2 Cimarron
Laos 1-0 Ceres-La Salle FC
Global got within touching distance of League leaders Loyola Meralco Sparks after destroying Philippine Army-GTI, 9-1, on Saturday night at the Emperador Stadium in McKinley Hill. The victory places the Dan Palami-backed club to second in the standings, just three points from the top. In the evening’s second match of the night, Green Archers United Globe and Kaya played out the League’s first scoreless draw.
Despite registering the most lopsided scoreline of the campaign so far, Global head coach Leigh Manson still sees plenty of room for improvement. “We’re still not firing on all cylinders,” he said after the match. “I think we’re building up. I think it was only a matter of time before we got sharp in front of goal.”
Few would’ve expected such a one-sided result to the match, as Army’s Ricardo Becite had scored right before half-time to make it 2-1 before the break. Iranian strikers Mojtaba Miromohammadi and Milad Behgandom had set the tone for Manson’s side early in the first half. Mark Hartmann’s introduction into the match in the 52nd minute ignited the Global scoring spree, as the talented midfielder scored with his first touch in the game – curling a left-footed strike at the edge of the box.
Five minutes later Misagh Bahadoran fired in a long range effort, with fellow national team player Jeffrey Christaens adding to Army’s misery immediately after. Hartmann, Bahadoran and Christaens each scored another within 15 minutes, with the latter completing his hat-trick before the final whistle.
With the victory, Global have made it three wins in a row after dropping their opening match to Loyola.
In the evening’s final match, Green Archers withstood a late barrage from Kaya to hold on to a scoreless draw. Jovanie Simpron had spurned a golden opportunity to put the Archers ahead early in the game, firing wide with only the keeper to beat. Kaya’s best chance came late in the game, with Masanari Omura’s header from a corner kick headed off the line by Arnie Pasinabo.
“I was happy with the performance,” said United head coach Rodolfo Alicante. “The game was almost even. Hindi lang namin naconvert yung chances.”
The draw keeps Green Archers in seventh place with four points in five matches, while Kaya move down to third with seven points and the same number of games played.
“We had enough opportunities to win the game,” said Kaya head coach David Perkovic after the match. “The last two games we’ve had questions asked of us, and it’s up to me to identify what we need to work on and how to improve the team.”
In the second division, Laos managed the shock of the season so far as they defeated powerhouse Ceres-La Salle FC, 1-0 earlier in the day. A stunning Lexter Maravilla goal in the 55th minute sunk the two-time Philippine National Club Championship winners. Dolphins United beat Cimarron 4-2 in the day’s first game. Currently Manila Jeepney top the division with nine points, followed by Philippine Air Force and Nomads FC.
